The Whispers – I Can Make It Better

Posted in Music with tags , , , on 03/06/2014 by DJ Yeah Right

Mmmm mmm.  I love the Whispers through the years, but their early 1980’s releases on Solar Records have to be my favorites.   This track was the second single off of the Imagination LP from 1980, following the unimpeachable “It’s a Love Thing”.   On a more important note, THAT FUCKIN’ FACIAL HAIR!!!  Gotta love it.  Enjoy folks.

Sylvester – Too Hot To Sleep

Posted in Music with tags , , on 09/07/2013 by DJ Yeah Right

In an almost belated happy birthday post today, we say happy 66th and RIP to the Queen of Disco.  Sylvester was an institution in San Francisco over his illness shortened tenure of nearly 20 years.  I wanted to spotlight a couple of songs on one of his more overlooked solo albums, 1981’s Too Hot To Sleep.  One is a shambolic mid tempo percussive disco workout, “Give It Up (Don’t Make Me Wait)”, and the other is a delightfully mellow stepper track called “I Can’t Believe I’m In Love”.  Too Hot to Sleep was Sylvester’s final album for Fantasy Records before he moved to Patrick Cowley’s Megatone Records.

Part of the impetus for this post is the fact that, in SF, it is too goddamn hot to sleep!  Jeeesus its hot downtown.  Ech.  Enjoy the jams!

Carlis Munro – Big Time Fakers

vinylripHere’s some serious Westbound Records disco funk from the motor city.  Released in 1979, it had Dennis Coffey’s superb guitar all over it.  Please enjoy.  More vinyl rips to come!!!

New Guys On the Block – On the Dance Floor

Ohhh do I love this track.  The Michael Jackson impression being done here is so good it co-opts some magic for itself.  Released by Sugar Hill in 1983, this did not catapult the groups featured singer(Lane) to any level of stardom above being a Sugar Hill recording artist.  I think it is a great little piece of post-disco dance floor magic.  Enjoy!
